The number of NYC residents who experienced difficulty affording needed food throughout the year has steadily increased every year, from 2 million in 2003 to 3.1 million in 2007 - a 55 percent increase. The number of NYC residents who would not be able to afford needed food immediately after the loss of their household income has increased from approximately 1.3 million in 2003 to approximately 1.6 million in 2007 - a 23 percent increase. The largest percentage increase in NYC residents experiencing difficulty affording needed food, and immediately unable to afford food after the loss of their household income, is among middle-income residents.
