Were you inspired by the Brooklyn Food Conference? Want to get involved in the good food movement? Here are some great opportunities! We will have more ways to get involved, so stay tuned.
Best way to get involved it to join our new network here.
Join a Neighborhood Group
We are forming neighborhood chapters of the Brooklyn Food Coalition where you can plan and participate in projects in your own community. Click here to find your own neighborhood group. Check out our social networking site for even more engagement.
Be a Brooklyn Food Coalition Volunteer
Do you want to be a food activist?
Do you want to help organize the Brooklyn Food Coalition?
Do you want to do food justice organizing and get PSFC work credit for it too?
We are creating a committee of food activists who want to do this important work and help build the food democracy movement in Brooklyn. If you want to work with your own neighborhood to develop food-related projects and you want to work on a Borough-wide issue like School Food, or organize a particular constituency like teens or seniors, or be a liaison to the other start-up coops in Brooklyn (depending on what Brooklyn’s neighborhoods decide is important), then please email us at info@brooklynfoodconference.org and tell us a bit about yourself and where you live so we can see if your interests meet the needs of this new committee.
Those of us on this committee are committing ourselves to a grassroots partnership of individuals and groups who strive to give an effective voice to all those who live in or serve Brooklyn and wish to achieve a just and sustainable system for healthy, tasty, and affordable food.
Each volunteer will work on specific issues, which will always be evolving and changing, so we must be flexible with how our time will be spent. We also have a minimum commitment of 8 hours a month in order to be effective in this work — but your choice to make a difference also means that your 8 hours of activism also fulfills the monthly membership commitment to the Coop.
Please let us know if you are interested. We’re eager to build an effective staff as soon as possible. This is your chance to be a food activist and get PSFC work credit for it too!
Advocacy Opportunity
Help win a strong Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act this year. Congress can take steps towards ending child hunger and to significantly improving the nutritional health and awareness of our children. This legislation includes all the Federal child nutrition programs, including: the School Breakfast Program, the National School Lunch Program, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
In reauthorizing the bill, Congress and the President will jointly decide how much will be spent on feeding hungry children, how many children will be aided, how much schools and non-profit groups will be reimbursed for providing meals, and what the nutritional qualities of the meals will be.
Please contact Kristen Mancinelli (City Harvest) at (917) 351-8706 or visit our website at New York Alliance for CNR to learn how you can join the campaign, mobilize your community, or propose your own recommendations to your elected officials.
